Photography Workshops With Maggie Rife Ponce
Photography and travel lovers combine your interests through Connection: Photography, a 10-day Workshop in the Philippines lead by world traveled photojournalist Maggie Rife Ponce.
With your camera gear packed and Lonely Planet in hand, begin your journey on the streets of Manila where a labyrinth of neighborhoods reveal a place in constant motion. Hop on a Jeepney! Sitting shoulder to shoulder with locals, this open-air bus-jeep hybrid provides an intimate view of this layered city.
Manila is photographer's playground, dazzling with color and easily accessible because of the warm and open nature of the locals. It's also where you'll learn the history of the country and the context behind the images you photograph.
It doesn’t stop there though.
Just when you’ve had your fill of bumper-to-bumper traffic, travel south to visit the native tribes of the Philippines. You can take your time as Maggie leads daily photo lessons starting with a walk to discover and recognize “sweet light," when the sun is just right in the sky to transform a scene. This lesson may seem basic but it will push you to be patient, searching and waiting for the ordinary image to become magical.
Other lessons cover creating dynamic portraits by first developing trust with your clients; how the rules of composition draw a viewer into a frame; and waiting for the decisive moment that elevates a static image into a compelling picture.
By day eight, you will be released on your own with an assignment to bring back a feature photo story of three to four images showing how you’ve connected with the experience. When the workshop wraps, these pictures will be displayed in the Connection Philippines Workshop opening in Chicago. The best part is you won’t have to worry about setup. The project founders will handle the logistics. This allows you to meet other artists and become part of a community of creators, ensuring your growth will continue long after you’ve returned.
Our 10-day workshop will culminate in an all out party. We’ll join the Connection: Dance and Connection: Art classes at the pristine, white sand beaches for one last feast to celebrate the experience.
